VISION
To be an exemplar 21st Century community garden for a 21st Century suburb.
MISSION
- To inspire pride and a sense of place for the community
- To maintain and expand the ground-breaking sustainable design principles on which Docklands is based as well as incorporating smart cities principles
- To reflect and contribute to current global thinking and trends around food production in a 21st century urban environment
- To be a catalyst, propagator and learning exchange of 21st century information and ideas for a whole-of-community approach to modern urban food sustainability
- To promote the continued greening of the suburb and extend the garden through balcony pots, rooftop gardens, podium gardens, office gardens and productive green walls
- To surprise and delight the broader community by demonstrating how a 21st century urban community can creatively generate solutions to food sustainability
- To be a place of connection or just a pleasant haven for a wide range of community members at all times of the day
This will be achieved by:
- Being a small scale source of usable local food available to the community with a strong emphasis on herbs and pick and come-again salad ingredients that can be used in small quantities on a daily basis
- Reflecting Docklands through selected plantings from the area before the arrival of man, the indigenous bush tucker, some foods and vegetables associated with the period when the area was in use as an industrial rail, truck and dock area through to contemporary thinking about 21st century urban food production
- Gardening practices that represent the 21st century green, blue and SMART credentials built into Docklands together with the latest smart cities practices
- Community activities and communal working bees of a nature that promotes inclusivity of a 21st century working community
Success will be measured by:
- The number and quality of positive references to the venture in the local and international media
- The number of households that regularly use community garden produce as part of their meal
- The degree of involvement elicited from the community including residents, businesses and those who work in Docklands
- The amount of influence the venture has in inspiring similar models locally and internationally
